Safeguarding Policies & Procedures
Staff & Volunteer Screening
All coaches, officials, and volunteers working with children at PGL must:
- Complete enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) checks
- Provide references and undergo background verification
- Complete mandatory safeguarding training annually
- Sign and adhere to the PGL Code of Conduct
Welfare Officer
Every PGL team has a designated Welfare Officer responsible for:
- Promoting child welfare and safeguarding awareness
- Being the first point of contact for safeguarding concerns
- Recording and reporting concerns to PGL leadership
- Supporting children and families affected by safeguarding issues
Code of Conduct
All adults working with children must maintain appropriate conduct:
- Treat all children with respect and dignity
- Maintain professional boundaries at all times
- Never be alone with a child in private settings
- Use appropriate language and avoid derogatory comments
- Report any concerning behavior immediately
Types of Abuse We Protect Against
Physical Abuse
Non-accidental physical harm inflicted on a child
Emotional Abuse
Persistent emotional maltreatment causing psychological harm
Sexual Abuse
Forcing or manipulating a child into sexual activity
Neglect
Failure to provide proper care, supervision, or support
Bullying & Discrimination
Repeated harassment based on identity or characteristics
Exploitation
Taking advantage of a child for labor, trafficking, or abuse

Anti-Bullying Policy
PGL has zero tolerance for bullying in any form. We are committed to:
- Creating an inclusive environment where all children feel safe and valued
- Addressing bullying incidents promptly and effectively
- Supporting both victims and those who bully others
- Teaching respect, diversity, and emotional resilience
- Involving parents/guardians in addressing bullying concerns
Mental Health & Wellbeing Support
PGL recognizes the importance of mental health and emotional wellbeing. We provide:
- A supportive environment where children feel heard and valued
- Connection to mental health resources and services where needed
- Training for staff to recognize signs of emotional distress
- Regular check-ins with children about their wellbeing
Confidentiality & Data Protection
Safeguarding information is handled with strict confidentiality. Only authorized personnel have access to sensitive information. Information is shared on a need-to-know basis with relevant authorities (e.g., local safeguarding boards, police) when required by law.

Safeguarding Training
All staff, volunteers, and coaches at PGL must complete mandatory safeguarding training covering:
- Recognition of signs and indicators of abuse
- How to respond to disclosures from children
- Reporting procedures and designated contacts
- Duty of care and professional boundaries
- Creating a safe and protective environment
Training is renewed annually and recorded for verification.
